Life and Disability Insurance Plans
The University of Chicago has selected Sun Life as our Life, Personal Accident Insurance, and Long Term Disability carrier effective January 1, 2016. The University offers coverage under two disability plans depending on the length and type of your disability.
Short-term disability (STD) is available at no cost to you and provides you with a percentage of your income for a short term disability.
Long-Term Disability Plan (LTD) provides you with income when you are disabled and cannot work for more than three months due to sickness, bodily injury or pregnancy, whether or not the disability is related to your job at the University. You can choose from the Base Plan or the Optional Plan. Typically, benefits under LTD begin after you have three months of continuous disability.
Group Life Insurance
Under the Group Life Insurance plan, the University of Chicago provides Basic Life insurance at no cost to you. You also have the option to elect additional Supplemental Life Insurance for yourself.
Also available to you are two accident plans, the plans provide benefits depending on the type of accident.
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) provides a benefit for death or dismemberment due to an accident. The accident does not have to be work related. You can purchase coverage for yourself and your family.
Business Travel Accident Insurance (BTAI) provides a benefit to all University employees if you die or suffer a serious injury in an accident while traveling on University business away from University premises. Generally, you are covered for five times your pay, from $50,000 to $500,000. Your participation automatically begins on your first day of work. The University pays the full cost.
